What is Gluconolactone?

What is Gluconolactone?

Gluconolactone, what the heck is that?

If you take a closer at our Collagen Booster’s ingredients, you’ll notice that it contains gluconolactone - a polyhydroxy acid (PHA) derived from glucose (naturally found in fruits and other plants). If you’ve heard of PHA before, you’re probably a big fan of Korean skincare. PHAs are considered to be the second generation of liquid exfoliants. Why? Because unlike other acids, they are gentle enough for people with sensitive skin.

Free radical scavenger

Gluconolactone is known for its moisturizing and antioxidant properties. It is used in cosmetics to help scavenge free radicals. To understand how free radicals work, it requires basic chemistry knowledge. Can’t remember anything from your chemistry classes? No problem, we’ve got you covered.

Our skin cells are made of molecules, which are made up of atoms. An atom is made up of three particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons. The protons and the neutrons make up the center of the atom (the nucleus) and the electrons fly around above the nucleus. Free radicals are atoms with an unpaired electron. They become unstable and highly reactive when they seek other atoms to attach to. This process is known as oxidative stress. Factors like cigarette smoke, pollution, and radiation are sources of oxidative stress that can damage the skin cells and lead to wrinkles and other age-related symptoms.

Products high in antioxidants reduce the oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals. How do they do that? Antioxidants are molecules stable enough to donate an electron to free radicals in order to neutralize them. Oxidative stress happens when the antioxidants are unable to neutralize free radicals.

Skin Barrier Function

Gluconolactone also helps strengthen the skin barrier function (SBF). The SBF represents a group of diverse functions (like permeability, antimicrobial, antioxidant, etc.) that occur within the stratum corneum (the outermost layer of your skin). An unhealthy barrier can lead to dryness and inflammation. Ingredients like gluconolactone work deep into the skin to strengthen the SBF that translates into a smoother texture, more even tone, firmer and plumper skin.
